What part of the plant is mainly used?

Scientific investigations revealed that almost every part of the plant contains useful substances but the most concentrated principles are found in the roots, followed by barks. As the roots are difficult to cut off from the plant, the barks are commercially most commonly used.

In Peru, its country of origin, the phytotherapy is legally practiced. The Cat’s Claw is one of the most popular drugs used for this purpose in various forms such as triturated dry barks for infusion, encapsulated dry powders.

Scientific studies were realized by many scientists in Austria, Italy, Britain, Germany and USA, therefore in these countries it is a well known plant as very effective for therapeutic use. In Austria there is a specially processed Cat’s Claw preparation called ‘Krallendorn’ officially approved as adjacent medicine for rheumatism.
One of the well known cases in which Uncaria Tomentosa was used is the application of freeze dried tablets donated by Peruvian Government to Ukraine to the victims of radiation leakage that happened in 1986. The director general of Radiation Medical Center of Ukraine, Dr. Romanenko, disclosed the effectiveness on recovery of immune system of patients.
In 1994, when the 1st International Congress was held on Cat’s Claw in Geneve, WHO recognized its excellent therapeutic efficacy.
Most of the scientific studies on toxicity and therapeutic efficacy of UT were made with the sample supplied by Immodal Pharmaka.
Special attention must be given to the joint clinical investigation carried out by Immodal Pharmaka and
Insbruk University Hospital in Austria. Immodal Pharmaka is the company, founded by Klaus Keplinger, the initiator of scientific investigations on Uncaria Tomentosa., that succeeded in discovering the method to eliminate tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids (TOA) from UT and prepare the extract with pentacyclic O. alkaloids (POA) and obtained US patents. The TOA are of chemotype that inhibit POA modulating function of immune system.
The thesis dealing with the clinical study on 40 RA patients carried out for 6 months by the Insbruk Univ. Hospital was published in the Journal of Rheumatism in 2004.
